Martial Arts for Life
At Ta Mo Tao Martial Arts you will find a practice where people find personal growth and challenge to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. With practice and the right attitude anything can be achieved.
We teach the traditional form of Korean Karate Taekwondo (which means way of hand and foot). This is the worlds most popular martial art form and incorporates combat techniques using hands and feet. Taekwondo is renowned for its great kicks and hand strikes but is also known for its self defence, sport competition, exercise benefits, meditation aspects and philosophy.
Taekwondo was designed for the purpose of both self defence and personal growth. Through the intensive physical and mental practice one can become the best that one can be. It is a martial art and way of thinking and in its discipline, technique and mental practice Taekwondo gives the student great self-confidence.
We also teach Kung Fu which means 'cultivated person' and is the generic term for all Chinese Martial Arts. It is a complete Martial Art incorporating stand up fighting techniques with throws, locks, holds and weapons. It is taught as self-defence within a framework of core values of ‘respect for life’ and ‘respect for oneself’. This provides the basis of the physical and mental conditioning leading to the goal of creating a ‘sound mind and sound body’.
In this way we are readied to face not only not only the opponent in self-defence, but also the challenges of life. In Martial Arts one must embrace humbleness and compassion and always be striving for greater understanding of oneself and the life around us.
The name of our Martial Arts group, ‘Ta Mo Tao’ comes from a combination of two important concepts. The term’ Ta Mo’ was both the name of an Indian Monk who established the tradition of movement and meditation at Shaolin Temple and a Sanskrit term ‘Bodhi Dharma’ meaning ‘enlightened knowledge’. ‘The Tao’ means the ‘Way’.
